Serve! Engaging Youth for Change

ALUMNUS PROFILE

Erin Daley 2001-2002

Erin Daley

My name is Erin Daley. I was a participant in the 2001/2002 Toronto Team. I grew up in a small town outside Ottawa, and was looking to move to Toronto, but wasn’t yet ready for University and was unsure of any other options.

After being introduced to Serve Canada and traveling back and forth for interviews, I was excited about the opportunity to be a part of the program. I wasn’t sure what the coming nine months would bring, but was ready for a challenge and anxious to open my mind and my heart to new possibilities.

New possibilities is exactly what being a team member is all about. Through working with many different Toronto communities and populations, we were able to explore not only the wonderful cultural diversities of Toronto, but also what brought out the best in us. We were able to come together as a team of very unique individuals and say that we truly made a difference in our city and in each other’s lives.

My life is now headed in a new and exciting direction, and I know that being a part of this program played a role in changing my life for the better. It truly opened my eyes, and I will continue to make a contribution to the communities of Toronto however possible.

We are used to talking to friends and teachers but we didn't know how to talk to people from different age groups. At first, we didn't know how and we felt scared. It was also a worry whether we could get along with others in the team, but as we worked together in different activities we all learned the importance of cooperation and respect for one another.
