Serve! Engaging Youth for Change

ALUMNUS PROFILE

Afzal Hawalder Graduate 2002

Afzal Hawalder

I gained a lot of skills like how to interact with diverse communities. I learned about a lot of different issues surrounding homelessness. This program has opened my eyes to the world of politics. It has shown me how politics plays a big role in how society works and how people feel the effects of what they do.

Through being in the program, I have decided that some sort of social work would be a field that interests me. Working in a team of diverse individuals and delivering workshops to youth shows that I can relate to them on many levels, being a youth myself.

The staff at Serve Canada has been an inspiration, from setting future goals, to deciding who I want to become. Serve Canada has shown me the many ways I could make a difference in other people’s lives.

As Serve Canada graduates we are all on the right path to achieving success. It seems to me that an individual’s success is directly related to the contribution that he or she can make to society. I truly believe that there is as much potential in the world as there are people to reach it. Perhaps more. But the secret is to find something in our selves that other people consider valuable, and then to let it grow and expand. In our own unique way each and every participant has achieved success and has made a difference at Serve Canada.

Serve Canada has demonstrated time and time again a commitment to the development and well being of youth. Serve Canada provides programming that puts young people in situations and environments that foster personal skills development and growth, teamwork in diverse teams, and community involvement. They learn and grow while engaging in hands-on initiatives.
