Serve! Engaging Youth for Change

Nikki Jo’s Blog (Start of Program)

Imagine walking into a new environment with fresh faces staring at you, at that moment you’re second guessing your decision to join such a social program. Meeting new people can be as challenging as learning math or writing a two page essay.

By the second week of orientation I roughly got to know the people I would be spending the next five months with. Wow! What a unique crowd of individuals, there are observers, social butterflies, leaders and funny personalities that cannot be ignored.

Each of us comes from various life styles and its amazing how ten completely different people can become the group Circle of Servers.

Our first taste of a retreat was at Adventureworks! in Hamilton; we worked as a team to conquer personal challenges and encouraged each other to keep pushing ourselves to a new and higher limit.

I’m hoping through Serve! I will meet new friends and discover new skills about myself that will strengthen my ability to achieve my future career goals. I can’t wait to see what Serve! has to offer and how far I am able to push myself with help from my fellow friends and mentors.

A March Break program for youth 13-16 years old. This program fosters community involvement, skills development and teamwork and is currently offered in Flemingdon Park/Thorncliffe Park.

We are looking for a few agency partners for weekly community projects for a team of 10 youth (17 to 24 years old) to meet community needs and to build youth civic engagement and skills development. Does your organization/agency have a project that can run once a week from end of January to May 2010? We are mainly looking for projects for Monday or Wednesday afternoons (or possibly a one-time service project on a Friday morning).
