Research on Homophobia

Hello my name is Zak, one of the nine youth in Serve! One of the major projects we are doing is Don’t Just Sit There, Stand Up Together which is tackling homophobia in Toronto. We are creating a Zine for youth, service providers and anyone in Toronto who wants to change the situation. One of the parts that I have had the privilege of doing is research on is the issue to find out the statistics on hate crime and what homophobia looks like.

The results of the research have been very interesting and shocking to me.  It surprised me how extensive homophobia is and how much violence queer people they face. They are discriminated even in major institutions such as school, health care and the police. These are institutions that queer youth do not feel comfortable in and are at risk--especially schools. In order for them to get a proper education they need to feel safe. The other institutions also have a history of homophobia towards queer youth who come in contact with them. However they are all trying to change the situation by putting in policies and programs.

The statistics on hate crime were also stunning. Most stunning was how under reported these crimes are and the violent nature of them. For example, 53% of reports to the 519 Community Centre were not forwarded to police. Also most crimes police deal with do not go convicted. The statistics by far underestimate the extent of hate crimes targeting the queer community.  Also they face more violence than most other groups. Most of the crimes they deal with are assaults. This means that their identity puts them at physical at risk. This project has provided me the opportunity to learn about these issues. Without this project I would have never learned about these issues that are very relevant in Toronto. Look out for the Zine.

Hey, I read your post, and something that I think will help gay youth in Toronto prepare for the reality of the growing hatred for homosexuals in Toronto, is a concept known as an “Emerging Human Rights Issue” called “SEXUAL DIVERSITY”.  ITs the Inclusion of sexual orientation into the definition of Diversity, that many business in Toronto aspire too.  Our workplaces can be free of hate.  Its up to us to stop the new rise of homophobia in our workplaces.  You as a youth may want to work at an online bank one day, and you will ahve to be prepared for the hatred you will encounter.

Google Sexual Diversity, its a concept that once fully adopted by workplaces in Toronto will protect many people like us from the ignorance and intolerance of Homophobic Hate.

I experieneced intense homophobic hatred working for an online bank in the Finch an 404 area.  I was referred to as a dog, fag, cocksucker, all the usual hate crap, most of my managers were viciously bigoted as well.  So, I thought this “Sexual Diversity” thing would help my workplace, well their response was just more hate.  A more organized attack though, from HR to upper management.  The hatred was overwhelming.  You must also realize that many of our new Canadian bothers and sisters that you will be working with come from more intolerant areas of the world, and will not agree with your rights to be openly gay at work, or may refer to you as a dog, fag, etc, and attack you.  Its just the new reality now, and the hate inside them is just from the old world, and with time maybe they will learn not to hate homosexuals.  WEll, all I can say is research “SEXUAL DIVERSITY” on google.  It will take you to the University of Toronto Sexual Diversity studies page.  Spread the word in the gay community to encourage employers to include sexual orientation into the definition of Diversity.

Also from my personal expereince working in Toronto, many of my former freinds that are homophobic were also anti-semitic, which is even more terrifying, but its he new reality in Toronto now, and you as part of the gay youth , must realize the rise of this new form of hatred oppressing gay people.

Good Luck, and remember you are not the only one oppressed.
