Serve! Engaging Youth for Change
25 August 2008
My time at Serve! this summer

My time at Serve! was fun and exciting! I really enjoyed doing the gardening on the green roof at City Hall. I felt a closer connection with the green spaces of Toronto. My experiences with the youth and elderly allowed me to broaden my perspective of the community and gained a sense of belonging within the community. While at St. Bartholomew’s Children’s Centre I enjoyed helping and interacting with all the youth. At Central Neighborhood Housing I had a lot of fun calling out the bingo numbers and seeing the seniors become happy when they win.

The trip to Adventureworks! was very tiring but exciting. The team building activities were really interesting and fun. Having my team cheer me on as I completed a ropes course was very uplifting. Although most of the workshops seemed a bit boring, I actually liked attending them. I found them very informative and useful.

When I started at Serve Canada, I was 21 years old, had never had a full-time job for longer than two months and was a year and a half clean from a crippling heroin addiction which I allowed to rob me of the opportunities every youth has when they are in high school. In the program, my personality came out for the first time. I discovered my natural leadership abilities but I also learned about the difference one person can make.
