My Own Sitcom

My own sitcom by Kaif Khan

When I first heard that “little mosque on the prairie” is going to make its debut on TV, I didn’t know what to expect. Was it going to be a stereotypical sitcom?  With angry muslims trying hard not to fit in Canada.

What I didn’t expect, was that it would be a hilarious show portraying the normal, average funny person with a muslim twist. Why do I mention religion so much? Because it is a very strong part of my identity along with my culture. Those are the two things which I felt would keep me sticking out like a sore thumb from the youth group at Serve.

When I met the group I was going to be with for the next six months, I felt a bit awkward, a bit out of place. These were the group of people I would never hang out with. I felt so different from them. They looked different from me, they used their own cool lingo I didn’t understand and I wore a head scarf unlike the rest of them.

After we spent days together and some nights at Kinark, they became the friends I would hang out with for the next weeks and months. With time, I found out how similar we were. I felt comfortable with them, close to them.

Now, I have my own sitcom. Me and my friends at Serve! with our own unique twist.

A March Break program for youth 13-16 years old. This program fosters community involvement, skills development and teamwork and is currently offered in Flemingdon Park/Thorncliffe Park.

We are looking for a few agency partners for weekly community projects for a team of 10 youth (17 to 24 years old) to meet community needs and to build youth civic engagement and skills development. Does your organization/agency have a project that can run once a week from end of January to May 2010? We are mainly looking for projects for Monday or Wednesday afternoons (or possibly a one-time service project on a Friday morning).
